These fish are very hardy, and tend to be less aggressive than other zebrasoma tangs. They need regular feedings of seaweed to maintain a healthy immune system.
Gem tangs demand such a high price for a couple of reasons. First, they are rather rare, and do not have a wide natural range of habitat. There are also very strict fishing and exporting policies with these beauties. Gem tangs make a fantastic show piece, we've had one in our display tank for over two years now, and he's definitely the favorite!
